An Unintentional Manifesto

This is the Marc by Marc Jacobs Dr. Q Groovee bag. It has been around for quite a while now (I know because I bought one about a year ago using a Bloomies credit), but that doesn't take away from the fact that it's a great bag. I don't normally like writing about old bags, but I've been having such a hard time lately finding something that I actually like that I've decided to relax the rules a little bit.
Trust me, I've been searching really, really, really hard. ELuxury, net-a-porter, Saks, Bloomies, Barneys, Bergdorf, Neimans, the list goes on. And yet nothing strikes my fancy.

So what's going on here? I've been thinking about that a lot lately. I haven't changed in my love/obsession of bags; therefore, the bags themselves must just be less lovable.

Here's what I think is happening: there is so much competition out there now, and the field has gotten so crowded, that designers are constantly trying to one-up each other with the next new thing. If a new trend shows even a glimmer of popularity (for example, the fold over bag), every other designer steals the idea and then beats it to death until it is no longer novel. And who gets hurt? The consumers, of course! The consumers who are not looking for the next new thing; who only want a nice, classic, simple bag that they can use forever; who don't have thousands of dollars to spend on new bags every season.

Anyone involved in the handbag industry, listen up: please stop this. Please go back to designing clean, simple, functional, and visually stunning bags. I know you can do it. I don't want to have to cover mediocre, years-old bags because everything else out there is sinfully ugly.

Anyhoo, now that I've said my piece, back to the M by MJ bag and why I think it's groovy.
  • The pleats provide a lovely, feminine detail
  • Can be carried over the shoulder or on the crook of your arm
  • It's the perfect size for a daytime bag, but probably isn't a good option for work
  • It costs less than 500 smackers
  • It's called the Dr. Q Groovee bag!!!!
Available for $498 at eluxury.
