A Royal Post

What's red and blue and carried all over?

Purple handbags, a must-have for fall.

Below is a collection of purple bags in all shapes, sizes, and shades, along with my snap judgment.

Pretty good effort, but this bag would be much more successful without the huge plaque in the middle of the top flap. Otherwise, I think it's a perfect weekend bag to be paired with jeans and a neutral top.

I liked the Histoire until Angelina had to ruin it and buy little Shilo a matching miniature version. And somehow the purple patent leather just doesn't work with this shape. Perhaps a deeper hue of purple would be more appropriate.

I actually kind of love this bag. Trust me, I'm as surprised as anyone. It has a sort of 70s retro vibe. And chain bags are super in right now. A perfect bag for Fall.

Oh, Prada. What is this bag doing for me? Absolutely nada. If pepto bismol came in purple, it would be this color. And the big bow? More like Bow-so the clown. Ick.

I don't know if this bag is technically purple - it's more of a burgundy, probably - but I LOVE it to pieces. We all know by now that I'm a fan of the Muse shape (look at the bag at the top of our blog for evidence), and the color is glorious. It's a psuedo-neutral, and can be worn with most colors that might be in your wardrobe. If you're looking to buy me a present, this is at the top of my wish list.

When I first saw this Botkier I hated it, but its appeal has grown tremendously in the last day or so. I'm not so much a fan of fringe, but the use of it on this bag is relatively restrained (unlike this DISGUSTING Prada), and I think it actually adds something to the overall look. It would look perfect paired with some dark jeans and a neutral top. It's comfy and slouchy and would be a great weekend bag.

Black Botkier Bag: Bravo!

To be sure, the black patent Botkier St. Tropez bag is not for everyone. It has short handles and cannot be worn over the shoulder. It is patent. Some may interpret the small flap closure as a black tongue with a large rectangular silver piercing.

But if you're a person who doesn't mind wearing a bag on your forearm (and I promise, this is something that you will get used to in time!), and you are seeking out a nice, basic, black patent bag, then this is a great option. Especially if the tongue thing doesn't bother you.

Like the red bag I posted on recently, this beauty can be carried from day into evening. It can be dressed down with a pair of jeans, shirt, and ballet flats, or dress up if worn with black pants, a feminine top, and pair of heels.

Available in black patent leather and white leather for $495 and $425 respectively at revolveclothing.com.

As a complete aside, I just wanted to give Emilie, my co-writer, a little shout out. In the words of Prince Herbert in Monty Python's Spamalot,
"Where are you? Where are you?
Where are you? Where are you?"
That is all.

Black and Blue and Patent Too!

The Botkier Bianca Patent Satchel is perfect for daytime but can also easily transition into an evening or weekend bag. Patent is oh so in right now, and I think it's a trend that's going to stick around for a while.

The brass hardware provides a nice contrast to the leather, and the pockets are the perfect place to store your keys and cell phones. Also, the straps are long enough to wear on your shoulder, which can be difficult to find these days.

I personally love the blue color (assuming you don't pair it with Jeans AND a blue top - no one wants to look like a blueberry!!!), but if it's a little to bright for you then the black version is a great alternative.

Available at Neiman Marcus for $595.

I'm Being Stalked. By a Department Store. That is Apparently Deaf, Dumb, and Blind.

Neiman Marcus has this cool new service where they send you product recommendations based on what items you demonstrate the most interest in on their website. Cool idea in theory, right? A little big brother-ish, but cool nonetheless.

Unfortunately, I think Neimans needs to do a little bit of work on their algorithms. Below are the recommendations they sent to me in a recent email. As you can see, they've committed some cardinal sins.

Note: Click on the image for an enlarged version.

I do not like a single one of those bags. They are drab and boring. The Kooba Jacinda looks like it's trying to break out of a straight jacket, while the Botkier Vixen is reminiscent of the yip yip bag Emilie mentioned in an earlier post. And I'm sorry, but the Juicy Couture bag is just unforgivable. You all know well by now how much I hate this brand. And it's called the Gossip Shoulder Bag. I may gossip, but I'm NOT 12 years old.

Nice try, Neimans, but apparently my preferences are too sophisticated and complex for you to understand. Kind of like a fine red wine.

What's better than buying a new handbag...?

...buying it on sale, of course!

The Neiman Marcus spring sale has started, and surprisingly there are a few cute handbags available that won't make you think "The Neiman Marcus sale is where handbags come to die."

Sorting through the mass of available options, even online, can be a royal pain in the behind, so I've done the work for you and have pulled out some of my favorites. Enjoy!
